Variceal banding, also known as endoscopic variceal band ligation (EVL), is a medical procedure used to treat varices, which are swollen and dilated blood vessels, often found in the esophagus (esophageal varices) or stomach (gastric varices). Varices can develop as a result of conditions that increase pressure in the blood vessels, such as liver cirrhosis. Variceal banding is a common method for managing these varices and preventing potentially life-threatening complications, such as variceal bleeding.
Variceal banding is effective in reducing the risk of variceal bleeding and can improve the overall prognosis of patients with cirrhosis and esophageal or gastric varices. However, it is essential to address and manage the underlying liver disease to prevent varices from recurring.
